The “Friends of Aberdeen” Dispute
A Baltimore Sun article this morning is detailing allegations that Mayor Fred Simmons is using "dirty politics" by trade marking and using the name "Friends of Aberdeen" when sending cards to city residents. It seems that an opposition group to the mayor has been using that name since January. Mayor Simmons, along with his friend and business partner Stephen Wright, has trademarked the name, which has upset the opposition group.
I think it’s great that we have groups that are willing to stand up and have their voices heard. It worked for them when they went door-to-door with their anti-annexation campaign. But politics is politics. This sounds more like an oversight on their part. The fact that they organized under a name without protecting it, only to have it scooped up later, does not make this "dirty politics". At least not any more than claiming their new name as "Honest Friends of Aberdeen". It seems they have even changed their website logo. Check it out!
