Army Moving Forward With Construction Despite NJ’s Concerns
It looks like the Army is planning on starting construction for the office and lab space to house the Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance mission at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.
New Jersey lawmakers are putting up a fight to try and save Fort Monmouth, which due to Base Realignment and Closure law is scheduled to close and have it’s jobs move down here. It’s understandable that the politicians would make a show out of this, since it makes it appear that they actually care about the individual workers. Only 30% of the Monmouth workers will probably decide to move down to northeast Maryland, leaving a substantial voting base in their districts.
Fact is once the BRAC law was signed by the president, it becomes a long shot that anything can be changed. They had time to get their voice heard when Congress passed it up, but was ineffective in making their case.
Since getting BRAC news around here is a challenge (outside of the Harford BRAC Blog) , check out the Asbury Park Press for a view of the "other side". It’s hard to discern between reporting and opinion in some of their articles, but nonetheless, the passion for their base is evident.
